Power System Analysis Application

FPSO Platform, Barents Sea, Norway

This project involved all power systems analysis activities for the longest High Voltage Alternating Current subsea cable in the world (110kM) connecting the weak Norwegian Electricity grid to the floating platform with ~ 60MW of demand and gas turbine generation plant.

Project Description
Smart Power Systems performed the lead technical role in the engineering analysis of onshore grid and FPSO with 110 km shore AC subsea cable and FPSO generation plant. The onshore grid was subjected to voltage stability limitations which resulted in the development of onshore STATCOM schemes to support the power delivery to the platform. Power system studies responsibilities include power flow, fault level, harmonic distortion and power quality, dynamic (small / large signal) and voltage stability, system earthing, protection, arc flash, generation control systems, plant operating philosophy / SCADA, system earthing and insulation co-ordination. Tasks included liaising with client, grid operator and main equipment manufacturer to find optimum technical and economic solutions.
