Based in the East Midlands, Smart Power Systems is a British company serving clients all around the world. We operate from our factory in Market Harborough where our team combine our deep engineering foundations with commercial and project expertise, enabling us to work alongside significant clients and on projects of all scales.
Dr Ian Chilvers’ vision, on founding the company, was to deploy active network management for clients experiencing grid constraints as a result of connections or other power system issues. Ian brought his deep knowledge of control and protection techniques for power systems that he learned from his early years working in distribution networks. Over time, through implementing major power systems for oil and gas clients, Ian gained a deep understanding of product development and innovation for power systems. Ian then combined this extensive industrial experience with his PhD research activities which involved solving grid constraints to facilitate the increased installed capacity of renewable energy generation. Ian saw how these systems were available for use with renewable technologies and became determined to develop Smart Power Systems’ own products using the same ideas and vendors.
Our past clients now include solar and wind project developers, housing and commercial developers, EPC contractors, manufacturers, sports stadiums and major clients in the oil and gas industry. We work closely with the suppliers of the components that we combine into our products. This includes manufacturers of battery cells, converters, controls and protection equipment.
Much of the value that we add comes from our ability to integrate hardware and software from different sources to address specific needs of a client. At the heart of all of our products is smartPHASE (our energy management system). This acts as the fulcrum: with multiple data inputs, it instructs the key components such as the battery and converter as well as external assets such as generation units and energy users such as vehicle chargers. smartPHASE is the solution for the transition of traditional electricity networks to Micro-Grids and Smart-Grids.
MEET THE TEAM
Ian has 30 years experience as a Power Systems Engineer. He started his career as an electrical engineering apprentice and after graduating joined Foster Wheeler Energy (an American Oil and Gas EPC Contractor) where he worked globally. His particular interest is the integration of new renewable power sources to the distribution and transmission grid, which is the subject of the PhD that he completed at University of Manchester in 2000. Ian combines the knowledge of power systems that he offers to engineering clients with his commitment to design and produce innovative products. When not working, Ian is found cycling the major and minor roads of Leicestershire.
Adam has extensive experience in the field of renewable energy, having served as Director of New Business for Lightsource Renewable Energy and independently developing numerous solar projects and anaerobic digestion plants. He is also a practising barrister, specialising in the corporate and commercial fields. Adam works on major projects and strategic relationships, in particular in the US and with major corporates in the UK.
Michael has worked in the global investment, infrastructure and renewable energy markets for over 25 years. He has taken a lead role in developing projects totalling over $40billion in the UK, Middle East, Africa, India, LATAM and the USA where he introduced Smart Power Systems. With a career that involved working at Pinsent Masons and EC Harris (now Arcadis) where he was a Partner working on projects that involved National Grid, EDF, UKPN, ESKOM and Samsung C&T amongst others, Michael has worked with Investment Banks, High Net Worth Individuals and the largest energy infrastructure organisations in the World working at the most senior levels of business and governments.
Alistair was a founder of one of Europe’s leading funds for solar development with projects installed on three continents. He created an innovative portal for managing GE Renewable’s aggressive global expansion of solar assets. Alistair is a keen cricket player who played at University. He remains active in the sport and serves proudly as a board member for the storied Cumbria County Cricket Club.
